Abstract

1405796 Dehydrogenation catalyst DOW CHEMICAL CO 25 Oct 1972 9933/75 Divided out of 1405795 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] A hydrocarbon dehydrogenation catalyst is prepared by forming a paste containing Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , or an alkali metal chromate or dichromate decomposable to Cr 2 O 3 , an alkali metal oxide or compound decomposable thereto, and water, forming the paste into pellets and calcining, wherein the Fe 2 O 3 is a mixture of anhydrous Fe 2 O 3 and hydrated Fe 2 O 3 , the latter being present in a quantity of 65 to 95 % wt based on the total weight of iron oxides. If the catalyst is to be used in an isothermal dehydrogenation reaction the iron oxide mixture should contain 79 to 95 % wt of hydrated Fe 2 O 3 . Alternatively, if it is to be used in an adiabatic reaction, the mixture should contain 65 to 79 % wt of the hydrated Fe 2 O 3 . Suitably, the composition contains 60-90 % wt of mixed iron oxides, 0.5 to 5 % wt of K 2 Cr 2 O 7 , 8.5 to 30 % wt K 2 CO 3 and 1 to 5 % wt cement. The composition may also contain modifiers, e.g. oxides of V, Mn, Co, Cu or Zn and other binders or pore-formers e.g. methyl cellulose, graphite or sawdust.
