Abstract
1405261 Light guides POST OFFICE 23 Aug 1973 [29 Sept 1972 8 May 1973] 45052/72 and 21882/73 Heading G2J A dielectric optical waveguide coupler has a cross-sectional area which increases as a monotonic function of distance from one end, located near a light source, to the other, located near a waveguide, e.g. a liquid-cored one, Fig.2 (not shown). A plurality of such couplers may be employed, the input ends being fed either by a single source, or by a separate source for each coupler, and the output ends may be juxtaposed, see Fig.9 (not shown). In one embodiment, Fig.10, a light-emitting diode 12, or a GaAs laser, is mounted, with a tapered dielectric waveguide 18 having cladding 2, in a container 9, cement 6 encapsulating the end 5 of the waveguide and the light source.
