Abstract
1416154 Electron beam systems; electron multipliers; photo-electric detectors POST OFFICE 24 Sept 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 46131/72 Heading H1D A device, for use in an opto-electric transducer, comprises a length of monomode dielectric optical waveguide having a core and a cladding, said length of waveguide being tapered along a section forming at least part of its length so that light propagating along the length will interact with a photocathode formed on a circumferential surface of the length of waveguide. Fig. 1 includes core 1, cladding 2, infra-red sensitive photoemitter 9 on taper 6 within anode 4 and B field 3 from coil 15 (Fig. 3, not shown) assisting coupling with channel multiplier 8. Light entering taper 6 increasingly propagates through the cladding and the structure increases the low quantum efficiency of the infra-red input (e.g. from a GaAs laser). The high E field due to the small diameter of the p/cathode assists electron ejection. The B field may be absent (Fig. 2, not shown), the electrons no longer orbitting spirally; anode 4 may be dispensed with (Fig. 4, not shown), taper 6 projecting into multiplier 8. Visible and U.V. inputs are also instanced and dimensions given.
