Abstract

1405150 Sodium carbonate CHEMIEBAU DR A ZIEREN GmbH & CO KG 27 Oct 1972 [30 Oct 1971] 49635/72 Heading C1A Dense soda having a bulk density of from 0À9 to 1À5 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> is made by (1) compressing between rollers a mass of crude moist sodium bicarbonate precipitated from an ammonia soda process and obtained after separation from its mother liquor, the crude moist sodium bicarbonate either itself having a water content of below 12% by weight or, if it has an initial water content of 12% by weight or more, having been mixed with sufficient essentially waterfree soda to provide the mass with a water content of below 12% by weight, and the compressing being sufficient to increase the bulk density of the mass to from 1À2 to 2 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> and (2) calcining the compressed mass at a temperature of from 140‹ to 250‹ C. directly to dense soda. The water-free soda, which is mixed with the sodium bicarbonate, may be obtained from the dense soda product or it may be a middledensity or light soda. The compressed product, optionally after comminution may be screened and only that portion with a particle size of 0À5-30 mm. calcined. The remainder may be compressed again with more crude sodium bicarbonate.
