Abstract

1405056 Modifying hydrophilic gels CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 18 May 1973 [22 May 1972] 23934/73 Heading C3P A transparent hydrophilic gel with improved mechanical and sorption properties made from a copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with acrylamide or methacrylamide is prepared by copolymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with 20 to 90 weight per cent of methacrylamide or 20 to 80 weight per cent of acrylamide- (based on the combined weight of the 2-hydro xyethyl methacrylate and the amide monomer) in the presence of a crosslinking agent and a diluent and further modifying the gel so obtained by heating in water or an aqueous medium having a pH below 8. In the examples 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate, methacrylamide, methylene bisacrylamide, 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate and butyl acrylate are copolymerized in the presence of water, diisopropyl peroxocarbonate and ethylene glycol in a flat mould. The resulting clear gel membranes are heated in water. Instead of water aqueous solutions of acids, e.g. formic, acetic or sulphuric acid, buffer solutions and solutions of some inorganic salts, e.g. sodium chloride may be used as the medium.
