Abstract

1375035 Size for glass fibres FIBREGLASS Ltd 17 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 33348/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] A size for coating glass fibres is an aqueous composition comprising a copolymer of one or more alkyl acrylates or methacrylates and one or more N-substituted aminoalkyl acrylates or methacrylates, and a silane. The copolymer is prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of a redox catalyst and contains sufficient of the amino group-containing monomer to make it soluble in aqueous acid. In the examples commercial copolymer dispersions are used which contain polymerized dimethyl- or diethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate and the silane is methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane or a commercial high molecular weight cationic amino silane. The size may also contain a plasticizer and/or a cationic or non-ionic surfactant acting as a lubricant.
