Abstract

1431245 Hardening gelatin FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 4 June 1974 [7 June 1973] 24797/74 Heading G2C A process of hardening gelatin comprises incorporating a hardener for gelatin into a composition containing (i) gelatin, (ii) a copolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid or a salt thereof and optionally substituted acrylamide and (iii) a thickener which increases the viscosity of the composition. The copolymer may be derived from sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium or ethanolamine salts of the acrylic or methacrylic acids and may contain up to 5 mol % of units derived from another monomer. Preferably it has a limiting viscosity of 0.3 to 6.0 at 30‹C in 1% aqueous sodium chloride solution. The thickener is a high molecular weight compound which increases the viscosity of a gelatin coating composition to a viscosity of 30 to 100 centipoises at 40‹C when the amount of the thickener is 0.001 to 0.5 parts by weight per part by weight of gelatin. Suitable thickeners are hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, a copolymer of methylvinyl ether and maleic anhydride or those disclosed in Specifications 630016, 632174 or 676459 or a poly (p-vinylbenzene) sulphonic acid.
