Abstract

1405020 Mixing an aerosol with a liquid BEKAERT SA NV 30 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49976/72 Heading B1C In a method and apparatus for mixing a first liquid with a smaller quantity of a lower viscosity liquid additive, the first liquid is introduced into an enclosed mixing chamber e.g. duct 51 in mixing head 1, Figs 1, 2, and the additive is introduced into the first liquid together with a pressurised gas, in the form of an aerosol. In the apparatus, the gas is introduced by means of an inlet duct 32, 60 associated with means such as atomising valves 34-39 for introducing the liquid additive. In the particular method and apparatus, the gas in supply reservoir 30 is compressed air and also pressurises additive reservoirs 23, 24 containing the optional additives Freon (registered trade mark) and water, and cleaning solvent reservoir 40 which flushes out the mixing head after use. The first liquid is a combination of two components, separately agitated heated and stored before use in reservoirs 2, 3. These components such as a polyisocyanate and a polyhydroxyl compound, are fed to mixing head inlet valves 14, 15 along lines 7, 8 and may be recycled along lines 16, 17. The valves 14, 15 are adjustable needle valves, Fig 4, which may be switched on and off by compressed air in ducts 73 and 74, 83 and 84 which acts on flexible diaphragms 71, 72. After introduction of the first liquid, adjustable needle valve 33, Figs 1, 2 is opened by solenoid operated valve 63 controlling the flow of pressurised air to needle piston 61 and the compressed air flows from duct 60 into mixing duct. 51 to create turbulence in the liquids therein. One or more of valves 34-39 spaced around the axis of duct 60 is opened and the liquid additive forced in forms an aerosol with the air. After mixing-aided by impellers 53, 56-the mixture is ejected through duct 52 and valves 14, 15 34-39 are closed. Pressurised air from line 32 then cleans duct 51. Flushing solvent from reservoir 40 may then be introduced. The valves 34-39 may be of different flow rates but introduce additive at the same pressure so that used singly or in combination they can provide a selectively variable flow of additive and hence mixtures of variable proportions of constituents.
