Abstract
1404959 Wound drainage apparatus SHERWOOD MEDICAL INDUSTRIES INC 8 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 56841/72 Heading A5R A portable wound drainage device comprises a container 18 having a substantially rigid peripheral side wall and means defining a variable volume chamber 42 within the side wall including resiliently urged displacement means movable in response to an applied force thereon to reduce the volume of the chamber and movable in the opposite direction due to the resiliency thereof, inlet means for connecting the chamber with a body wound, and locking means for selectively holding the displacement means in a position wherein the volume of the chamber is reduced and for releasing the displacement means so that the resiliency thereof effects movement thereof from the said position to increase the volume of the chamber whereby fluid is drawn from the wound. The displacement means comprises a resilient diaphragm 22 urged away from the bottom wall 30 of the container and clamped in a peripheral groove by a rigid cover 26. A plate 24 rests on the diaphragm. A U- shaped handle 28 pivotable on cover 26 is movable in openings 55 in the cover and in its inoperative position engages in a recess in the cover. In use, the handle is pivoted to a position normal to cover 26 and depressed thereby depressing plate 24 and diaphragm 22 which are held in the depressed position by the engagement of ledges 70 on the handle under catches 62, (63) on the cover. The device is then strapped to a patient and a drainage tube from the wound connected to the inlet. The handle 28 is released from the catches 62 and fluid drawn into the chamber as the diaphragm moves away from the bottom wall. The container may have a drainage outlet and may be graduated.
