Abstract

1404946 Winch driving arrangements POTAIN 8 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 36871/72 Heading B8B A two drum winch is driven through differential reduction gearing 1 transmitting drive between the two drums 3-4, each drum being lockable by a slide bolt 15 or 16 whereby drive applied to the winch produces rotation of whichever drum is not locked. The differential gear includes a sun gear 18 driven by a motor 6, a drum crown wheel 21 secured to a cage 2 rotatable with the drum 3, the sun 18 and crown wheel 21 engaging planet pinions on a planet carrier incorporating a further sun gear 19, and a further crown wheel 20 on the cage 2, the gear 19 and wheel 20 engaging further planet pinions on a further planet carrier 17 splined to a torsion shaft 5 splined to the drum 4. With the drum 4 locked, the planet carrier 17 is locked and acts as a reaction member for the gear 1 to drive the drum 3, and with the drum 3 locked, the crownwheels 20, 21 act as reaction members for the gear 1 to drive the drum 4.
