Abstract

1404814 Aspartic acid-amide copolymers; modified polyimides KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO Ltd 25 Oct 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 49238/72 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions A5 and C5] Polyaspartic acid derivatives having hydrophobic and hydrophilic substitutents are obtained by reacting (a) a polyimide having a unit as the main compound and which is the heat polycondensation product of aspartic acid or of an ammonium salt or mono- or di-amide of, or mixture of ammonia with, aspartic, malic, maleic or fumaric acid, with (b) at least one primary or secondary amine R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP>NH where R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1-20 alkyl or alkenyl and R<SP>11</SP> is C 8-20 alkyl or alkenyl, and hydrolysing the reaction product with alkali. The polyimide may have a molecular weight of 300 to 30,000. 0À005 to 1À0, preferably 0À015 to 0À5 equivalents of amine may be used per imide group of the polyimide. The product may be further treated by ionexchange to partially convert the alkali salt groups to free acid or to a different salt. In examples lauryl, oleyl, N-methyl-N-lauryl and a mixture of lauryl and polmityl amines are used as the amine. Uses.-The products are useful as surfactants especially for detergent and cosmetic compositions. In Examples (2) 10% of the product, a copolymer of α,#-aspartic acid and itsoleyl amide is blended with 5% anhydrous sodium sulphate, 0À5% perfume and 84À5% water to give a liquid shampoo; (3) 25% of the product, a copolymer of α,#-aspartic acid with its N- methyl-N-laury amide is blended with 1À2% triethanolamine, 10% glycerine, 0À9% perfume, 5% stearic acid and 57À9% water to give a vanishing cream; and (4) 20% of the product, a terpolymer of the lauryl and palmityl amides and potassium salt of α,#-aspartic acid, is blended with 3% sodium citrate, 0À5% perfume, 3% anhydrous sodium sulphate and 73À5% water to give a detergent for table-ware.
