Abstract
1404355 Electrolyte for metal-halogen cell OMF CALIFORNIA Inc 14 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971 16 Oct 1972] 52615/72 Heading H1B An electrolyte for an electric energy storage device comprises an aqueous solution containing a metal halide and a dendrite-reducing amount of a soluble carboxylic acid or metal salt thereof having up to three carboxyl groups, the acid being aromatic, aromatic substituted aliphatic or hydroxy substituted aliphatic. Virtually all metals are suggested for the metal halide except alkali and alkaline earth metals. Zinc, iron, cobalt or nickel are preferred. As described the electrolyte is used in zinc-chlorine cells wherein circulating zinc chloride electrolyte entrains chlorine as chlorine hydrate. The additive exemplified in specific compositions is adipic, glutaric, trimetallic, gluconic, D-tartaric or phthalic acid. Some of the additive may be added just before each recharging of the cell. The electrolyte may also contain polydioxolane or other polyethers.
