Abstract
1,215,794. Activated carbon. STANDARD OIL CO. 11 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7238/69. Heading C1A. Activated carbon is produced by treating an aromatic carboxylic acid with sufficient electrolyte (defined) to at least form the salt of the acid, optionally drying the salt formed and thermally decomposing this salt in an inert atmosphere. Optionally the acid may be neutralized in a suitable solvent for the salt, e.g. water, with sufficient base to form the salt of the acid before adding the electrolyte. Excess electrolyte may be added to the soluble salt in order to act as a defecting agent included within the molecular structure of the soluble salt, thereby creating a defect in the molecular structure. Specified suitable electrolytes include the hydroxide, oxide, halide, carbonate, sulphate, phosphate and nitrate of the metals of Group IA or IIA of the Periodic Table, preferably potassium hydroxide. The aromatic carboxylic acid, optionally prepared by the oxidation of a carbonaceous material, e.g. petroleum coke, may be a monocarboxylic acid, polycarboxylic acid, polynuclear monocarboxylic acid, polynuclear polycarboxylic acid or a mixture thereof, but is preferably petroleum coke acid.
