Abstract

1398126 Manganese module demetalation MOBIL OIL CORP 6 June 1972 [22 July 1971] 26309/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] Manganese nodule (i.e. aquetic stalagmite comprising MnO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 ) is treated, prior to use as catalyst in the demetalation of a metalcontaining hydrocarbon charge stock, to remove therefrom, selectively with respect to the iron oxide component thereof, at least 25 weight per cent of the manganese dioxide component thereof, for example by converting the manganese dioxide to a manganese compound soluble in a solvent in which iron oxide (or any iron compound formed concomitantly with the manganese compound) is substantially insoluble and, simultaneously or serially, leaching the nodule with such a solvent to dissolve and remove the manganese compound. A reagent capable of reducing manganese of the manganese dioxide component to the divalent state may be used in converting the manganese diode to the solventsoluble compound and the solvent may be an aqueous solvent; for example, the nodule may be treated either serially with carbon monoxide (reagent) and an aqueous alkaline solution (solvent), for instance a solution containing ammonium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate (see Example 1), or with sodium chloride (reagent) dissolved in an acid medium having a pH greater than 3 (solvent), for instance aqueous actic acid (see Example 2), or serially with sulphur dioxide (reagent) and water (solvent) (see Example 3). Prior to use as catalyst, the treated nodule may be sulphided using hydrogen sulphide.
