Abstract

1404130 Making electrical contacts LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 11 Sept 1972 [6 Nov 1971] 51673/71 Headings B3A and B3R In a method of manufacturing an electrical contact assembly from a spring steel backing plate and a metal (e.g. tungsten) contact the plate is hardened but untempered and the contact is welded to the plate using capacitor discharge resistance welding after which the assembly is tempered in a non-oxidizing and non-carburizing atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen. The welding apparatus used is rated at 1000 watt/ sec. having a 4 inch diameter pneumatic cylinder and a capacitor charging voltage of 650 volts. The spring steel may be at least partially nickel plated to provide corrosion resistance.
