Abstract

1403796 Riveting NACANCO Ltd 1 March 1973 [27 April 1972] 19652/72 Heading B3U [Also in Division B8] A headed rivet 5 is secured to a sheet metal wall portion 2 of a portable article so that its shank 7 protrudes outwardly from the wall portion 2 by passing an extension 8 of the rivet shank 7 through a hole 3 in the wall portion 2 having a diameter less than that of the rivet shank 7, folding a rim 4 surrounding the hole 3 on to the wall portion 2 and deforming the rivet extension 8 over the inside of the wall portion 2. The wall portion 2 is strengthened by a radially inwardly or outwardly extending circular indentation 1 which surrounds the hole 3. The rim 4 is folded back on to the wall portion 2 during the step of deforming the rivet extension 8, which may be tubular. Washers may be included in the joint. The article may comprise a cylindrical paint can having a pair of oppositely located copper rivets 4 securing a carrying handle.
