Abstract

1402993 Electric discharge apparatus G W BALL 21 Dec 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 45095/71 Heading H1D A device for storing ions, e.g. between a weak ion source and a mass spectrometer, comprises a ceramic ring electrode 1 having an inner surface defined by a hyperboloid of revolution about axis 3 and two end electrodes 5 also having hyperbolic inner surfaces as shown, the inner surfaces of the electrodes having a metallic coating to which external connection may be made. Apertures 7 are provided in the end electrodes 5 for the entry and exit of ions and the apertures can be covered by grids 8 connected to the adjacent metallic coating. It is stated that the effect of appropriate application of r.f. and D.C. potentials to some or all of the coatings is to selectively trap or release ions of a desired e/m ratio.
