Platen machines; inking-apparatus.-A platen press, with a printing-head movable parallel to itself between a platen and an inking-pad, is constructed with printing-characters 7 on adjustable disks mounted in a head 5 on an arm 8 pivotally supported on parallel bent links 9, 10 which are rocked on intermediate pivots 13, 14 by linkage 15, 19 from a crank 21 on a shaft 22 driven through a clutch operating to bring the head to rest before it is in its most rearward position. When started up, the head is first carried slightly rearwardly and downwardly against an ink-pad 23 carried in arms 24 pivoted at 43 and yieldingly.and adjustably controlled by a rod 45 extending through a lug 46 on the machine casing 1, and carrying an adjusting-nut 49 and spring 47. The further movement carries the head against the platen, in which position the pivots 13, 14 and pivotal connexions 11, 12 are in one plane. The platen 2 is supported on a stem 3 pressed upwardly by a spring 4, but is locked against upward movement, except during the impression, by a roll carried by a pivoted lever 32 on the frame jamming against the curved end 31 of a lever 28 connected by a link 27 to a collar 26 at the bottom of the stem 3. The stem is released, during impression, by an adjusting- screw 36 carried by the link 15 of the head mechanism coming against arm 34 of the lever 32 so as to lift the roll clear of the part 31.
