Platen presses; inking-apparatus.-In a machine for marking boot and shoe linings and other fabrics, of the kind in which the impression is made by type carried on a swinging head and inked as it moves to marking position, the impression is made by a series of typewheels 16 on a spindle 17 preferably hollow for heating and mounted in a head 7 on an arm 6, which swings on a link 5 and carries a roller 9 guided in a slot 11 whereby, during the marking stroke, the head is first raised and then allowed to drop under gravity. The arm 6 is connected by a link 13 to a bell-crank 12, connected by a rod 14 to a treadle by which the machine is operated to make an impression on the bed 3. The type-wheels are formed with characters 16<a> and separately locked in position by a series of pawls 19 pivoted on a pin 18 and acted on by springs 19<a>. Mounted in the arm 6 is a spring plunger 21 carrying a frame 20 in which is journaled a screw 25 supporting a nut 26. This nut is formed with an arm 27 on which is pivoted a pawl 28 adapted to engage the type-wheels when the plunger 21 is reciprocated. To reset any of the type-wheels, the nut 26 is traversed until the pawl 28 is opposite the particular wheel and the plunger 21 is pushed back by means of the lug 24. The projection 27<a> on the arm 27 first disengages the pawl 19, and the pawl 28 feeds on the type-wheel. The bottom line of characters is inked by a roller 32 on an arm 35, which is raised by a rod 36 from a separate treadle worked by the operator's foot just in advance of the main treadle.
