This invention relates to a type-wheel t ewriter and its object is to render possible t e o eration of the same in such a manner, that a movements correspond with the natural 5' position and movement of the fingers of the operator. The typewriter according to the present invention is of simple construction and small size, and is readily portable.
The object is attained according to the .10 resent invention in that the operatmg lever or moving the type-wheel into the position of typing is horizontally movable about a vertically disposed shatand carries the typewheel and its operating gear as well as the ink-roller. The feed of the slide carrying the paper-roller and also the inkin of the types by means of the ink-roller is e ected by the movement of this single operating lever, which .carries the type-Wheel and also serves l0 for guiding the rack setting the type-Wheel.
. The invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in section, with the cover removed; Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line l5 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fi 3 a transverse section on the line 3-3 of ig. 1;' Fig. 4 a plan view with the cover in position and Fig. 5 an elevational view with thecover and certain springs omitted.
The main-lever 3 is movably mounted on a pin 2 of the bed-plate 1 and provided with ak lateral extension 4 for operation by the thumb of the operator. The lever 3 may be rotated about the vertical pin 2 until the lever strikes a stop hereinafter described. As a result of rotating the lever 3 a typewheel 5, which is rotatable about a pin 6 .of the main-lever 3, cooperates with a paperroller 7, the latter being rotatably mounted in bearings 8 of the paper carriage 8', the toothed bar 9 of which 1s slidably mounted in guides of the bed-plate 1. At the rear, the paper carriage 8 is supported on the up- .turned edge of the bed-plate 1 and is pressed -against the same by a spring 8". A double armed lever 11 is rotatable about a pivot 10 of the main-lever 3 and moved t'owards the toothed bar 9 of the roller-slide by means of a spring 12, which is attached to the lever 11 near its pivot 10. During the rotation of the main-lever 3, the free end of the lever 11 engages the teeth of the bar 9 of the paper carnage feeds and forward the latter for one tooth, because the main-lever 3 rotates about the pivot 2 until the end of the arm of. the lever 11 engages a sto 14 fixed to the bedplate. n. Now the fee ing o ration` of the roller-slide is at an end the ever 11 is provided with an elongated slot 15, throu h which passes the pivot 10, in order to ren er possible a further rotation of the main-lever for pressing the type-wheel 5 onto the roller 7 without feeding ythe paper carriage. By means of a spring 16, one end of which is secured to the pivot 10 while the other end thereof is attached to the lever 11, the latter 1s pulled towards the type-wheel 5 but can yield in its bearing durmg its cooperation with the lstop 14.. By pressing on the end 11 of the'lever 11 the latter may/be dis-` engaged from the bar 9 and the carriage may then be moved by hand. Instead of mounting yieldingly the lever 11, the same may be mounted unyieldingly. However in this case the lever 11 would have to be shaped in such a manner, that its arm, resting on the fixed stop 14 can yield for 1nstanceby reducing the length of the lever-arm by bending. Further the main-lever Bis retained by a spring 17 inl a position in which the type wheel 5 isremoved from the pa er-roller.

On ad'usting the arm 20, the rac 18 is shifted an engages a gear 24 of the type-wheel 5 and adjusts the same;
The types are inked by an inkt-roller 25, which is mounted on an arm 26, rotatable about a pivot 27, which is xed to the bedplate 1. The arm 26 passes round the typewheel 5 and is provided with an extension 28, which extends beyond the pivot 27 and is engaged by the hook-shaped extenslon 29 of the main-lever 3. In case the latter is rotated, the arm 26 is rotated simultaneously in the direction ofthe arrow shown in Fig. 1, whereby the ink-roller 25 passes over the e` riphery of the type-wheel 5. The ink-rol er 25 is mounted on a yielding extension 30 of the arm 26, so that it 'cooperates and rolls upon the periphery of the type-wheel. On the main-lever 3 is also mounted an ink storing roller 31, the path of the ink-roller 25 belng such and the ink storing roller 31 being arranged in such a manner, that the inkroller 25 also cooperates with the ink storingl roller 31 and thereby is inked.
In the illustrated embodiment the types are arranged on the type-carrier of the typewheel in three superposed horizontal zones 32. The type-wheel 5 is arranged vertically slidable on its pivot 6 and forms a unit with the toothed wheel 24 and near its pivot its under face is engaged by a lever 33, which is fulcrumed tothe bed-plate 1. A depression key 34 is pivotally attached to an arm 36 of the lever 33 by means of a pin 35, so that on depressing'the key 34, the lever 33 is moved and lifts the type-wheel 5. The kev 34 is rotatable about the pin 35 and retained in the upright position by means of a spring 37, in order to place into the typing position one of the type-zones 32 of the type-wheel 5 ac` cording to requirement and thus lift the latter to a greater or smaller extent. A stop 39, arran ed on the bed-plate 1, is guided on a pin 40 xed to the bed-plate and is maintained in its uppermost position by a spring 41, in order to limit the rotation of the main-lever 3 towards the aper carriage. In the raised position a su cient clearance remains between the stop 39 and the bed-plate 1, so that the main-lever 3 can swing up to the pin 40 and, by means of its lateral extension 42, contacts with the pin 40, thereby limiting its movement. The teeth 24 of the type-wheel 5, rotated by the main-lever 3, cooperate with a tooth 43 which is secured to the plate 9 carried by the guide 9 thereby securing the setting of the type-wheel 5 in the position corresponding to the character to be typed. At the same time the teeth 24 of the type-wheel 5 adjust and secure the type to be depressed. In case it is desired to feed the slide without typing, the stop 39 is depressed against the action of the spring 41, so that it rests on the bed-plate 1. Now the lateral extension 42 of the main-lever 3 when the latter is oscillated strikes the sto 39, thus limiting the movement of the sai lever without pressin the type-wheel 5 onto the paper-roller 7. i cover 45 of Celluloid ora similar trans arent material is rotatable about a pin 44 o the bearing 8 at the right hand side of the paper-roller 7, the said cover covering the right hand end of the latter as shown in Fig. 2. The cover 45 may be colored in a particularly striking color, in order to indicate to the operator, that the feeding operation is at an end. The cover 45 is of such a size, that thereby the normal length of a line is limited. If more characters are to be written, the cover 45 is rotated upward by depressing the extension 46, projecting beyond the pivot 44, whereby the paper roller is released.
I claim- 1. In a typewriting machine,'the combinationof a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carria e, a type wheel mounted on said lever and a apted to'be moved thereby toward and from .the carria e, means carried by said lever for feeding sai carriage, an ink storing roller carried b said lever, a second lever pivoted in proximity to the type wheel, an inking roller carried by said second lever and means for oscillating the latter upon oscillation of the rst mentioned lever to bring the inking roller successively into contact with the type wheel and the ink storing roller.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carriage, a type wheel mounted on said lever and adapted to be moved thereby toward and from said carriage, a pivot carried by said lever, a double armed lever having an elongated slot through which said pivot extends., spring means engaging said pivot and a point of said double armed lever for yieldingly moving said double armed lever on said pivot and means for yieldingly causing one arm of said double armed lever to engage said carriage and feed the same on actuation of the rst named lever.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carriage, a type Wheel mounted on said lever and adapted to be moved thereb toward and from the carriage, means carrie by said lever for feeding said carriage, and an upwardly spring (pressed depressible stop for said lever adapte to permit said lever to swing the typewheel into contact with the carria ev when in its upper position and to prevent said lever from swlngmg the typewheel into contact with the carriage when in its depressed position.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carriage, a type wheel mounted on said lever and adapted to be moved thereby toward and from the carriage, means carried by said lever for feeding said carriage, an ink storing roller carried by said lever, a second lever pivoted on a fixed pivot, an inking roller carried at the end of said second lever, and cooperable extensions carried by 'said levers respectively and adapted to cause said second lever to 0seillate about its pivot upon oscillation of the first named lever and move t-he inking roller successively into engagement with the type wheel and the ink storing roller.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carria e, a type wheel mounted on said lever and a apted to be moved thereby toward and from the carriage, means carried by said lever for feeding said carriage, a gear on said type wheel, a rack bar adapted to mesh with said gear and rotate said type wheel, a table containing a reproduction of the characters on said type wheel and means movable over said table and cooperable with said rack bar to determine the extent and direction of move-- ment thereof. p
6. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, a lever oscillatable in a horizontal plane toward and from said carria e., a. type wheel mounted o'n said lever and a apted to be moved thereby toward and away from the'carriage, and an inking roller v mounted adjacent said typewheel and adapted to be oscillated b said lever over the face of said typewheel efore the latter comes into contact with said carriage.
