Abstract

1401222 De-icing rails B KIRSCH 13 July 1972 [13 July 1971 28 Sept 1971] 32876/72 Heading B7J [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for thawing or de-icing rails and points comprises a frame 1, which has burners 3 along its sides and is carried by a support structure 6 connectable to a vehicle running on rails to support the frame 1 in a generally horizontal position with the burners 3 directed towards the rails, a feed pipe having a shut off valve (41), Figs. 5-7 (not shown), for liquid fuel supply to the burners 3, an ignition system for the burners, and actuating apparatus such as an hydraulic ram 12 connected to the frame 1 operable to pivot the frame 1 in a generally horizontal plane relative to the support structure 6. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame 1 is rigid and pivotally connected to a portion 9 of the structure 6 which projects over the frame, by a central rotary bearing 5. As shown in Fig. 4, the frame 1 is a hinged parallelogram which pivots about the pivotal connections of its longitudinal struts 2 to a cross tie member 4. The frame 1 is bodily laterally displaceable parallel to the support structure, such as by slides 21 carried by the portion 9 and engaging rollers 22 carried by a portion 7 which is connectable to the vehicle by members 8. Side struts 17 are pivotally connected at 18 to uprights of portion 9 and are connected via a cross member 10 to the frame cross tie 4, so that the frame 1 can be pivoted upwardly and downwardly about the pivots 18 by actuating hydraulic rams 20. As an alternative means for bodily lateral movement of frame 1, an arm (15), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by cross tie 4 may be connected to cross member 10 by a further hydraulic ram (16), so that rams 12, 16 may act in combination to move frame 1. An electrical control circuit, Figs. 5-7 (not shown) controls ignition coils (36) to ignite the burners 3 and an electro-magnetic shut-off valve (35) to supply gas, for ignition to the burners. Gas is fed via pipes in or on the longitudinal members 2 of the frame 1 and connectors 23, Fig. 1, or 24, Fig. 4, are provided to receive flexible gas supply lines. The control circuit also electro-magnetically operates the liquid fuel shut-off valve (41), via a timer relay (40) which closes the valve (41) after a period of say 15 seconds unless a push button (39) is pressed to restart the timed valve opening.
