Abstract

1400984 Treating exhaust gases; bypassing catalytic converters DAIMLER-BENZ AG 13 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 43153/73 Headings B1F and B1W A catalyst system for treating I.C. engine exhaust gases comprises catalyst 5 enclosed in a jacket 4 which is non-rectangular in a cross-section normal to the gas flow direction and is enclosed in a casing 3 which is rectangular in the same cross-section or vice versa, the outlet(s) 9-12 from the jacket(s) passing through a silencer 7 and joining downstream thereof a pipe 15 which extends through the silencer and is provided with a valve 18 to control flow of gas through the exhaust pipe. At low engine speed, the valve 18 is closed and the exhaust gases all pass through the catalyst; but at higher engine speed, valve 18 is opened by an electric motor 19 and most of the exhaust gases pass through the spaces between the jackets 4 and the casing 3 and then via pipe 15 which is perforated where it passes through the silencer 7. A further silencer 23 is also provided.
