Abstract

1400742 Waterproofing electric cable WESTERN ELECTRIC CO INC 20 June 1972 [21 June 1971] 28728/72 Heading D1P [Also in Division H1] An apparatus for applying a flowable substance to an elongated article having interstices therein includes means for reducing pressure in the interstices, means for applying the flowable substance to the pressure-reduced article for entry into the interstices, means for cooling the article prior entry to the substance applying means and means for altering the consistency of the substance in the interstices subsequent to exit thereof from the applying means to render the substance non-flowable. As shown, electric cable is impregnated with a water-proofing mixture of petrolatum and polyethylene by passing it through an airsealing constrictor 38, vacuum section 48, airsealing constrictor 59, vacuum section 61, heated constrictor 62, cooling section, 82 constrictor 103, heated petrolatum/polyethylene applying section 104, constrictor 118, section 119 allowing gradual cooling of the impregnated cable, constrictor 121 and cooling section 122. The applied substance may comprise 85 to 95% petrolatum and 15 to 5% respectively polyethylene, the constituents being heated to substantially 265‹F prior to mixing.
