Abstract
1400652 Insulated metal pipes KABEL-UND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE AG 31 Jan 1973 [3 March 1972] 4979/73 Headings H1A and A4D In a coaxial tube arrangement of at least two metal tubes, e.g. for super-cooling a cable in the inner tube 1, at least two strips of super-insulating material 4 are helically wound on the inner tube in alternating winding directions and with spaced turns so as to leave holes at the inter-sections of the strip edges. The inner tube 1 is supported by elements 5 which pass through these holes. As shown, the elements 5 are attached to the inner tube 1 by eyelets 3 in a helically wound strip 2. Sleeves are placed over the elements 5, which may be filaments of synthetic material, to protect them whilst the layers of super-insulation 4 are wound over the strip 2, and are then removed. Successive layers of super-insulation 4 are wound from strips of different widths, the ratio of the strip widths being either a whole number or not. The gap between adjacent turns of the same strip is between 0À5 and 4 mm. and preferably 1 to 2 mm. The support elements 5 are attached to a member 6, which may be helical or a series of connected rings, which is then received within the outer tube, the space between the tubes then being evacuated.
