Abstract

1400516 Sliding-clasp-fasteners BAYER AG 30 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49850/72 Heading E2S [Also in Division B5] A dimensionally stable sliding-clasp fastener is made in known manner from macromolecular polyester or copolyester monofilaments oriented by stretching, in which:-(i) the intrinsic viscosity J of the monofilament (as determined at 20‹C in a 60:40 by weight mixture of phenol and tetrachloroethane) is from 0.80 to 1.07, preferably 0.82 to 0.92; (ii) the angle of orientation of the crystallites within the monofilament is from 17 to 26‹; (iii) the intrinsic viscosity J and the angle of orientation of the crystallites are numerically related by the equations: 8(4J-1)-2 < Angle of Orientation <8 (4J-1)+2; (iv) the average crystallite breadth in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the monofilament is from 80 to 200‹A; and (v) the average variation of the crystallite size in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the monofilament expressed numerically by the halfmaximum breadth of the narrow-angle X-ray reflection, does not exceed 0.40. Preferably the monofilaments comprise polyethylene terephthalate. In examples the monofilaments are melt spun and stretched in a hot water bath at 95‹C up to 4.5 times their original length, and then set in hot air while free to shrink. Zip fasteners made from such filaments are dimensionally stable and show less than 1% shrinkage after ten minutes exposure to boiling water.
