High molecular weight melt-spun filaments of a polyester are oriented by drawing the meltspun filaments having an optical birefringence of about 5 x 10<SP>-3</SP> and having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À8 between a feed roll and a draw roll operating at a higher peripheral speed than the feed roll, the filaments being drawn by passage over a heated stationary snubbing surface or around the feed roll, which is then heated, and then subjecting them to a heat treatment for at least 0À05 second at a temperature between 200‹ C. and 5‹ C. below the melting point of the filaments before passing them around the drawroller, which is unheated. The heat treatment for polyethylene terephthalate is 220-260‹ C. and may be applied by a liquid or air bath or as a heated metal plate. The polyester filaments contain a major proportion preferably at least 90% by weight of the following units derived from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. The remaining units may be derived from other reactive ester-forming compounds such as other aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylic acids and/or aliphatic or aromatic glycols containing 3-10 carbon atoms. Oriented filaments may be provided composed of polyethylene terephthalate containing at least 98% by weight of the above units, which have an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À8, an extension at break of at least 9%, a tenacity of at least 8 grams per denier and a free shrinkage at 150‹ C. of less than 12%.
