Abstract

1400405 Control of winding machines and length measurement JAMES MACKIE & SONS LTD 11 July 1972 [7 May 1971] 13778/ 71 Headings D1D and D1F [Also in Division G3] In a precision winding machine the yarn or tape 2 engages a speed detecting means, e.g. pulley 12 connected to a tachogenerator 38, a control unit 40 is set to a predetermined voltage which corresponds to a desired speed of the yarn or tape and this is compared with a signal from the speed detecting means and the voltage or frequency of the electrical supply to the winding spindle motor 22 is adjusted accordingly. The tachogenerator 38 may be replaced by a device which causes fluctuations in an electric circuit. The windup motor is preferably an A.C. induction motor. A gapped disc 30 rotates past a sensor 35 which operates a length indicator 34 calibrated in yards. The apparatus also includes tensioning pulleys 8, a slub catcher 10 and a stop motion 26.
