Abstract

1400325 Heart pacers SEIMENS AG 4 April 1973 [4 April 1972] 16215/73 Heading A5R A heart pacer comprises a circuit 9 for producing heart-stimulating pulses, energy sources, and switching means 5-8 which connect the energy sources to the circuit 9 in cyclic sequence. The energy sources are batteries 1, 2 connected in parallel and, via diodes 3, 4 to an astable multivibrator 5 and a bi-stable multivibrator 6 and directly to respective switches 7, 8 which may be transistors. The astable multivibrator 5 causes the bi-stable multivibrator 6 to alternately cause the switches 7, 8 to connect the batteries 2, 1 respectively to the circuit 9, with an alternating frequency equal to or less than the heart stimulation frequency which is equal to the output frequency of the circuit 9 (about 60 pulses per second) which is also controlled by the astable multivibrator 5. If the voltage of the battery connected to the circuit 9 drifts outside a predetermined range, a voltage comparator 11 provides a signal to the bistable multivibrator 6 to prevent it from switching in the defective battery. Alternately, the voltage comparator 11 may permanently prevent the connection of a battery if such connection would result in the voltage across the circuit 9 to lie outside the said range. The voltage comparator 11 also provides a signal to the astable multivibrator 5 to reduce its frequency to a predetermined low value when a defective battery is present. More than two batteries, switches etc may be provided, in which case the bistable multivibrator 6 is replaced by a binary counter.
