Abstract

1303016 Heart pace-makers ESB INC 11 Nov 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 52477/71 Heading ASR [Also in Division H3] A pulse generator in a beam pacemaker is supplied by parallel connected batteries such that if one battery fails the pulse rate changes. This will give an external indication of the failure. The generator shown is of blocking oscillator type in which a timing capacitor is charged through resistors until transistor 25 starts to conduct, whereupon, by regenerative action both transistors 25 and 26 are turned on and then turned off. During the on period the capacitor is discharged and the transistors accordingly remain off until the capacitor has recharged. The supply is obtained from three parallel batteries connected to the supply line via isolating diodes and to the charging circuit via resistors 50, 52, 54. If a battery fails the charging current through the corresponding resistor falls and the pulse rate reduces. The pacemaker may be as shown in Fig. 2, one electrode being the side wall and the other a pole (72) in the form of a transvenous catheta for connection to the endocardium.
