Abstract

1400137 Expanding and stretching metal COMALCO (J & S) PTY Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 37904/73 Heading B3E A machine 20 for expanding a workpiece having a slotted web portion comprises a frame 21 having a longitudinal member 22 and transversely extending bearers 23 for supporting workpiece tool supports 26 extending in a longitudinal direction, workpiece engaging tools (61), Fig. 8 (not shown), 114, Fig. 10, carried by respective tool supports to engage longitudinal edge portions of the workpiece, power actuated devices 27 coupling the supports and arranged to increase the transverse distance between the supports to expand the workpiece, a first abutment member 34 and a first control member 33 coupled to the devices, and a second abutment member 38 co-operable with a second control member 37, the members enabling control of both outward and inward movement of the supports. A hand operated valve control (41), (42) effects further movement of the movable tool supports. Cylinders 27 are coupled to the frame 21 by trunnion blocks 28 which allow limited relative pivotal movement of the cylinders. Termination of the stroke of the cylinders is provided by a threaded rod 49 carrying two pairs of nuts 50 which can be adjusted to allow stretching of workpieces having tapered sides. End clamps 45 are provided on the frame and are operated by trunnion mounted cylinders 46. A cross-bar 97 is mounted on the piston-rod of the cylinder 46 and carries tension bars 93 attached to toggle links 91 situated between clamping blocks 90. Bending of the web portions 57 is effected by securing a track 110 to the lower tool support 26 for grinding and supporting carriage blocks 113 having support hooks 114 for engaging the edge of a mesh panel. A series of blocks 113, Fig. 11, are interconnected by a flexible line 116 to maintain them in an equally spaced position when taut. The positions are fixed by providing the upper support 26 with a cam plate (117), Fig. 13 (not shown), having recesses (118) engaging over respective blocks (113), to enable the workpiece (54), Fig. 5 (not shown), to be engaged on hooks 114.
