Abstract

1400126 Wells &c FOUNDATIONS PATENT & INVESTMENT CO NV 21 Feb 1973 8481/73 Heading E1F A method of installing a pervious drain in an impervious stratum comprises directing a jet 84 of water vertically downwardly into the stratum to form a hole therein, the hole being formed in the absence of a casing for supporting the wall of the hole so formed, and slowly filling the hole with a pervious material e.g. coarse sand. The jetting apparatus 72 also comprises nozzles 86, 90 for producing water jets 92 which serve to erode the wall of the hole and to flush loosened particles out from the hole. A fixed annular cutter 88 is provided at the head of the jetting apparatus. The jetting apparatus is reciprocated when forming the hole and is then maintained stationary for a given period to flush the hole. The sand is either shovelled or fed from a hopper (not shown) into the hole at a rate of three to twelve cubic feet per minute.
