Abstract
1399974 Liquid quench cooling hot-dipped strands ARMCO STEEL CORP 30 May 1973 25712/73 Heading C7F A vertically moving hot-dipped strand is liquid quenched by passing the strand with clearance through a vertical chamber 10 having top and bottom openings for passage of the strand, supplying a cooling liquid to chamber 10 through an inlet 39 at the bottom thereof, providing a cooling liquid outlet 40 adjacent the top of chamber 10, supplying gas under pressure to the bottom of the chamber substantially in the direction of travel of the strand and supporting the cooling liquid within the chamber on the pressurized gas and maintaining the bottom opening free of cooling liquid whilst passing the strand through the gas, and liquid within the chamber. The gas, e.g. air, enters at 30, and passes through the plenum chamber defined by surfaces 26 and 20d; the wire or strip enters via passage 28, and water from 38 is prevented from flowing back to the hot-dipping apparatus by dam 22; a sight glass 52 serves as a water-level monitor; the coating metal may be Zn, Al (alloys) or terne.
