Abstract

1399645 Coating steel with Ni; passivating prior to enamelling HENKEL & CIE GmbH 3 Nov 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 50709/72 Headings C7F and C7U] A steel surface is pre-treated, e.g. for conventional white enamelling by these steps in sequence: (1) degreasing (2) optional removal of any rust from the surface (3) treatment with an aqueous solution containing at least one complexing agent for heavy metal ions (4) pickling and (5) nickel-plating. Typically, step (2) uses dilute H 2 SO 4 , step (3) uses a cyanide, e.g. of Na or K, or an alkanolamine with at least 3-OH groups, or a Na or K salt of oxalic, tartaric or citric acid, or a polyhydroxycarboxylic, aminopolycarboxylic, 1-hydroxyalkane-1, 1-diphosphonic, 1-aminoalkane-1, 1- diphosphonic, or aminomethylene phosphonic acid, in 0À1-5 wt per cent aqueous solution, which is acid, neutral, or alkaline, the pH being adjusted with OH<SP>-</SP>, CO 3 <SP>=</SP>, HCO 3 <SP>-</SP>, silicate, borate or ortho-, pyro- or polyphosphate of alkali metal; a wetting agent may be present and treatment is for 1-10 minutes at 15-90‹C, step(4) uses H 2 SO 4 and step (5) an electroless plating solution containing NiSO 4 ; rinsing steps are used where required. The Ni coating may be passivated in a 0À5% solution of NaNO 2 or 3 parts NaNO 2 to 1 part borax, and dried at 110‹C.
