Abstract

1399501 Blood oxygenators R A DEWALL 27 July 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 35213/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A perfusion safety valve, which is designed for use in blood oxygenating systems wherein it is disposed downstream of an oxygenator and upstream of a pump (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises an elongated relatively rigid tube 18 perforated at 20, an outer membrane wall 26 outside the tube, and an inner membrane wall 24 within the tube, the two membrane walls being sealed to the ends of the tube and defining a closed space 28 therebetween. Space 28 contains a saline solution. Tube extensions 30 are barbed as at 34 to facilitate their connection to the lines of the system. The inner membrane 24 is made of any suitable blood compatible material such as a silicone rubber or a polyvinyl plastics material. In use, as long as the head of blood in the oxygenator reservoir exceeds a predetermined level, the pressure of the same will maintain the inner membrane 24 in the position shown, that is with the membrane abutting the inner wall of tube 18. If, however, the blood level fall below the predetermined level, then this together with the slight vacuum created by the pump will result in the atmospheric pressure applied to the outer membrane 26 collapsing the same and so driving the saline solution within space 28 through the perforations 20 to force the inner membrane to collapse and thus seal upon itself, (Figs. 3 and 5, not shown). Accordingly the valve precludes any possibility of air embolism.
