Abstract
1359561 Blood oxygenators BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 3 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 5061/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B1] A blood oxygenator comprises a flexible plastics envelope having a flow passage defined by heat seals 18, 20, and including a blood oxygenating portion 22, entry ports 36, 38 for introducing a stream of blood at one end of the passage, an exit port 40 for removing blood at the other end of the passage, and a member (59) (Fig. 2, not shown) comprising a pair of plastics sheets 60, 62 heat sealed together to define a pair of interconnected inflatable chambers 66, 68 and which is folded longitudinally between the chambers 66, 68 and secured adjacent to the oxygenating portion 22, so that on inflating the chambers 66, 68 the cross-sectional area of the oxygenating portion 22 is increased. To hold the envelope rigid a generally U-shaped inflatable section 50 defined by a seal line 48 may be provided. Alternatively the oxygenating portion may include a flexible tube, surrounded by a rigid pressure chamber so that change in pressure of the chamber changes the cross-sectional area of the tube (Fig. 5, not shown). Oxygen is introduced through a porous plastics sparger 42, and the blood then passes through a defoaming portion 24 consisting of a sponge 26 containing a defoaming agent, and a tortuous passage 28.
