Fishing-vessels.-A chamber for smoking fish &c. especially designed for use on board ship, but also applicable in other cases, consists of two portions, an upper portion which contains the fish sliding vertically inside the lower portion, which contains a fire-box for the smoke-producing material. The figure shows a cross section of a ship provided with a smoke chamber of this type, the inner portion being in its highest position. The inner chamber, which is formed with double walls, C, D, having heat retaining material between them, slides between guide pillars B, Y, fixed to the deck and in the hold, slotted lugs being provided to engage with the pillars. Angleirons C<2>, D<2> make contact with the lower surface of the deck, or the top of the coaming J, when the chamber is in its highest and lowest positions respectively, and packing-material may be provided to make the joints smoke-tight. Counterweights are attached to the inner chamber by ropes over pulleys to facilitate raising and lowering. The counterweights may be placed either above the deck or in the hold, and are arranged to slide on guides. The fish are carried by sticks E, supported on shelves K at the sides of the chamber, pegs being provided to prevent the sticks from being displaced on the shelves. The lower chamber is separated from the remainder of the hold by partitions W<2> of sheet iron &c., and is provided with a smoke-tight door. The fire box U is held in place by angle irons U<2> fixed to the floor of the chamber. If it is necessary under stress of weather to lower the inner chamber, while full of fish, the fire-box is withdrawn through the door, and the smoke guided into the chamber by a metal hood, so that the smoking can proceed without scorching the lower rows of fish.
