Description

.F. STANKO-WSKI. BARREL SMOKING oven. 4 MPLxcATIoN meu nec. n. 191s.
i Patented June 12, 1917.
FRANCISZEK STANKOWSKI, OF BALTIMQORIE., MARYLAND.
BARREL-SMOKING OVEN.
Be it known that I, FRANCisznK STAN- nowsKi, subject of the Czar of Russia, re-
c siding at Baltimore, in the county of Balti- .more City and State of Maryland, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Smoking Ovens, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of coopering and has special reference to a barrel smoking oven.
As usually practised in cooper shops the l barrels, after the Staves and heads are as.-
sembled and hooped, are subject to abath of hot smoke for the purpose of closing the wood pores after thoroughly drying the barrels. i
This operation is performed in the open shop or in ovens in theshop with the result that the smoke spreads through the entire shopthus working great inconvenience to the workmen and detriment to their health. Moreover, this' method can not insure a proper bathing in ydense smoke owing to the freedom with which the smoke will escape from the vicinity of the barrels.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of smoking oven so proportioned and constructed as to effect the bathing of the barrels in a body ofdense smoke without the smoke finding its way into the shop, the apparatus beingnot produce a smoke of requisite density' owing to the fact that too great a quantity of "oxygen (from the air) is permitted tov combine with the carbonaceous elements of the fuel employed and the proper imperfect combustion is not effected.
A second important object of the invention isl to provide an improved construction of oven so proportioned and arranged as to produce such imperfect combustion as will result in the production of a body of dense smoke in the vicinity 'of the barrels to be smoked.
A third important object of the invention is to provide such means of introducing the air. which is necessary forsuchcombustion, to the oven in such manner as to have very little effect in causing movement of the smoke away from the vicinity of the barrels being treated.v
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application n led December 11, 1916.
Patented June 12, 1917. serial No. 136,318.
Vith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specilically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts inthe several views, and
Figure 1 is a front View of the oven.
Fig. 2 is a vertical median section thereof.
`Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
' Fig. Fia 2- Y .Fig 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out this invention I have 4i is a section on the line 1 -4 of found that there are certain definite relationships existing between the cross sectional areas of different parts of the device which 'must be closely adhered*v to v,in order to 'progreat motion in the body of smoke produced by the inflowing air.
To this end I provide a smoke chamber 10 having a front wall 11 provided with an access opening 12 which is closed hermetically by doors 13 when the barrels B are being smoked. The bottom 14 of this chamlber forms a rectangular hearth on which the fuel is placed, the barrels being supported on brick stools 15.
The rear wall 16 of this chamber preferably forms the outer wall of the building and is provided With a flue opening from the outside as lat 17 and extending vertically up to the top of the rear Wall the vertical portion being shown at 18. The top of the chamber starts level with the inner flue opening and extends upwardly and rearwardly at an angle of 45 so that the brick courses may form a series of inverted steps 19 the treads and risers of which are equal.
peculiar importance as otherwise too rapid an upward flou' of smoke will result or, if the angle is made less` the damping effect will be too great and the fire will go out.
I have found this feature to be of tions this air is just suflicient'to From the top extends upward a smoke flue 20 having its back wall continuous with' the back wall of the flue 18 and of a cross sectional area equal to one-ninth the hearth and efficient device of the. kind described and for the purpose specified,
is claimed as new, is l 1'. A barrel smoking oven Having thus described the invention, what chamber having a hearth, 'hermetically closing doors at the front of the chamber, an aii` inlet flue opening into the'upper part of the chamber, and a smokel flue extending upward from the too of said chamber and having a cross sectional area not greater` than one-ninth the door area of the cham- Icomprising a ber, the air inlet Hue having a cross sec'- tional area not greater `than one-sixth the cross sectional area of the smoke flue.
2. A barrel smoking oven comprisinga chamber having a Hoor constituting a hearth, doors hermetically closing' the front wardfrom the top of the chamber andhav- 1 ing a. cross sectional area not greaterthan one-ninth lthe floor area-of the hearth, the
top. of said chamber being inclined from the' front to "the rear at an angleof not more than 45 to the horizontal, said top being angularly 'corrugated transversely of the chamber,..the chamber having a back wall provided withv an air inlet flue .opening from the outside near 'the bottom of the wall and' extending vertically upward in v the wall to open on a' levelv withthe lower edge of thechamber'top, said air inlet iue" having a cross sectional .area l,not vgreater than one-sixth thecro'ss sectional area voi the smoke Hue. v
lntestimony whereof I' aliX my;signature l in the presence of two witnesses.
