To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, James N. Mums, and Asnna SENOR lhmoan, citimns of the United States, both residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabau'ia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke and Heat Generators; and we do hereby declare the following to lie-a full, clear, and exact. do seription of the invention. such as; will enahle others skilled in the. art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in smoke generators. and has for an object to provide an improved smoke generator in which the smoke chamber will he entirely independent and dimounectetl from the furnace or fire box, and constructed with a secondary smoke chamher tor ltttlV- iug the smoke after circulation in the smoke house. and rev-heading and returning the same.
'ith these and other ohjeets in view the. invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particulariv pointed out in the claims.

In the pipe 29 is a damper 32 operated by a handle 33 from the front- 10. or other part of the generntofins desired. A strainer or spark arrestea :H is stretched across the pipe 29 and may be extended also across the collar 30. and the same acts to prevent dust or spat-Ice from entering the simoke room.
The collar 30 and pipe 29 are connected by a pipe 41 with the lower part of a smoke 10 C house-42 appearing: in Fig. 6, where the innate, etc are to he treated, and the pi 2G is connected to the roof thereof as in icated at ltii also in Fig. (i. if found desirahle or necessary. a circulating fan 40 may he placed in the circuit.
In the use of the device the wood or other smoke generating material is introduced into the smoke chamber 14 through either or hoth doors 1:) and 16 which are swung upwardly about their pintles to give access thereto. Subsequently these doors are closed, and fuelis introduced through the door 4 and distributed over the fire bars 2 in the fire box 1. The same being then ignited'will heat the wood in the smoke chamber 14 and cause the wood to give off smoke which will pass u through the pipes 29 and 41, as controlled y the damper 32, and to the smoke house 42 where the smoke will circulate about. The smoke in the smoke house 42 which has not been utilized will pass to the pipe 26, under the influence of the circulating fan, and be conveyed therethrough back to the secondary smoke charm ber 31 in a volume controlled by the damper 28, which, if the smoke is thin, may be moved to open wide the pipe 26 and efi'ectually closethe branch 27, preventing access of air thereto. If the smoke isthicker and denser than desired, the damper 28 maybe moved to open the branch .27 as required, thereby permitting the current of smoke passing through the pipe 26 to draw in air from the atmosphere, which, becoming mixed there- -with, will thin out the smoke. The smoke returning through the pipe ill to'thc sec oiidary chamber 31 will circulate about the walls and roof of the rhambcr H and will again become heated. subsequently passing out through the collar 30 and returning to the smoke house where it is again utilized.
Itis obvious that thoseskilled in the art may vary the details ofconstruction and arrangements of parts without departing from the'spiritof our invention, and tlnrefore we do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.

The combination with a smoke house, of an improved smoke gmicrator therefor ineluding a fire-box, a primary smoke chamber above saidfire-box, a secondary smolm chamber partly surrounding said first-- named chamber, means for conveying smoke. from both the primary and secondarycha1nhers to said smoke house, and a line for re turning the smoke from the smoke house-to said secondary chamber, substantially as do scribed.
2. The combination with a smoke house, of an improved smoke generator therefor ineluding a fire-box, a primary smoke chamber located above and non-communicating with respect to said fired'io'x, a secondary smoke chamber, means for conve ing smoke from said primary and secondary chambers to said smoke house, a flue for returnin the smoke from the. smoke house to salt secondary chamber, and means fol introducing air to said secondary elnuaber whereby to thin the smoke to the required density, substm'itiaily as described.
3. The combination with a smoke house, of an improved smoke generator therefor comprising a fire-box, a primary chamber -heatedby the fuel in the fire-box and in which the smoke is initially aerated, a seeondary smoke chamber in which the smoke is re-heated, means for connectingboth' said primary and secondary chambers With said smoke house, a fine for mun-hing the smoke from the smoke house to said secondary chamber, a fan for. roinoting a circulation of the smoke tlirougi filtid flue, a branch in said flue in communication with the atmosihcre. and a valve at the junction of said iiranch and .fiue for controlling the passage of smoke through the flue and of air through the branch, substantially as described.

The combination with a smoke: house, of an improved smoke generator therefor comprising, a fi m-box, a primary smokechamberlotalted above said Hie-box, a pipe rising from said primary smoke chamber, a secondary smoke chamber partly surround= ing said primary ehamlwrm collarsurrounding said pipe and providing an outlet for the smoke from said secondary chamber, means ior conveying the smoke from said pipe and collar to said smoke house. a. flue for rcturning the smoke from the smoke house to said secondary chamber an air inlet iuvsaid iiue, and means for controlling 'the passage of the smoke through and the air into said flue. substantially as describet'l.
