Abstract

1399317 Coated synthetic paper SOLVAY & CIE 20 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 34671/73 Heading B2E A coated synthetic paper is produced by forming, and consolidating at an elevated temperature and a pressure of 150 to 250 g/cm<SP>2</SP>, a sheet including polyolefin "fibrils" and a non-opacifying filler and coating the surface of the consolidated sheet with amylaceous composition. The "fibrils" are 3- dimensional networks of specific surface area greater than 1 m<SP>2</SP>/g made up of filaments of thickness c. 1Á. The fibrils may be wholly polyolefinic or up to 50% of the polyolefin fibres may be replaced by cellulosic material. The filler may be precipitated CaSO 3 or silica. The filler may be introduced into the sheet as an aqueous suspension before compacting and coating with an aqueous composition of starch optionally with a CaCO 3 or silica filler. The preferred olefin is high density polyethylene, but may be a copolymer or polymer of ethylene or propylene or a mixture of polyolefins.
