Abstract

1358314 Coated fibrous web; reinforced cellulosic membranes UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 26639/71 Headings B1X and B2E [Also in Division D2] A reinforced cellulosic material, which may be in the form of a tubular or sheet dialysis membrane, is formed by impregnating a porous woven or non-woven fibrous web support with 0.3-2.1 gms of a cellulosic derived material per 100 sq. inches of web to adhere to and at least partially encapsulate the web and bridge substantially all of the interstices and pores thereof. Such a reinforced material has a water permeability of 800-10,000 gms. H 2 O/100 sq. in./24 hrs. at 440 mm. Hg gauge pressure The fibrous web support may be of cellulosic fibres employed in the production of rice paper, yoshino paper, hemp, rayon, flax or mixtures thereof with polyesters, nylon or acrylics. The cellulosic impregnant may be regenerated cellulose, a cellulosic ether (specified). Preferably a solution of cellulose xanthate is applied as a coating to at least one surface of the fibrous web support and allowed to penetrate. The membrane is then coagulated, regenerated, washed, and optionally softened with a plasticiser, e.g. glycerine; sorbitol; polyethylene or propylene glycol or urea and finally dried.
