Abstract

1398810 Removing waste products in industrial processes HAWLEY MFG CORP 29 Oct 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 50145/73 Heading F4X In an aspirator system, in particular for fume ventilation, wherein a travelling carriage 21 embodying a chamber 22 therein, is mounted on a stationary elongate header 10 and is sealed to the header by a flexible web 20 positioned over an apertured wall portion 18 of the header except within said carriage wherein, as shown in Fig. 2, the web is lifted from the wall portion 18 to provide communication between the header and the moving chamber 22, a series of bowed leaf springs 44 (and/or 53) are provided on the header structure adjacent one or both edges of the web 20 to retain the latter against the wall portion 18, and means on the carriage 21 are provided so that as it moves (in either direction) along the header, successive springs are first flattened to allow the web to be moved away from the wall and then released so as to again retain the web against the wall. Suction may be applied to the header via one or more evacuator conduits 12. As shown, the spring flattening and releasing means comprises radially extending flanges 55 formed on rollers 23-26 around which the web passes as the carriage 21 moves along the header. The apertured wall portion 18 of the header 10 may be a side wall (as shown) or its bottom wall. In a preferred use, a reducing connection 27 extends from the chamber 22 and has one end of a flexible conduit 29 attached thereto. The conduit 29 at its other end (not shown) may be connected to a hood for scavenging fumes, e.g. from a pouring ladle in a foundry.
