Abstract

19,838. Rushton, T. H., and Store, J. C. Oct. 2. Ventilating vehicles.-Railway carriages are supplied with fresh air when travelling in tunnels &c. by means of a conduit A laid between the rails and connected to a fresh-air supply by pipes C. The conduit A is sealed by a flexible strip b; Fig. 3, held in position between guide-pins d, Fig. 4, and pressed upwards by springs c. Fitted to the carriages are collectors D' terminating in flared ends D<2>- and fitted with rollers D<3> which depress the strip b, allowing fresh air to pass up into the carriage. Fig. 7 shows a modification of the sealing-device in which the conduit A is .closed by two inflated tubes b, b<1>. The collector D' is here made with a tapered end D<2> which passes between the tubes. Fig. 10 shows a further modification in which the sealing-strip b is held in place' by an inflated tube b<1>. A water-seal or other similar device may also be employed. Foul air may be drawn off from the carriages by ventilators as described in Specification No. 6367, A.D. 1904.
