Abstract

1398681 Rail vehicle buff and draft gear DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 19 Feb 1973 [24 March 1972] 8127/73 Heading B7T Rail vehicle buff and draft gear comprises a housing 1 closed at end 3 and open at its opposite end 6 to receive a rubber cushioning unit 7 and friction cushioning unit 8, the housing having a constant rectangular cross-section, and wherein the unit 7 consists of springs each comprising a pair of polyurethane rubber pads 11 of figure 8 configuration joined together through apertures 14 in a spring plate 12, each spring being separated by a spacer plate 10, and wherein the friction wedge unit 8 consists of a wedge 17 and a pair of triangular section shoes 18, longitudinal forces on the wedge being converted to longitudinal and transverse forces. Pins extend through the housing into the wedge to hold the gear together and plates 13 and 13 are located either side of the friction unit. Apertures 29 in the housing enable the rubber pads to be varied. The housing may have weight reducing depressions 30.
