Abstract
1398656 Karl Fischer titration BAYER AG 19 July 1973 [19 July 1972] 34580/73 Heading G1B The water content of an organic liquid may be determined by (a) titrating Karl-Fischer reagent into a body of inert liquid which liquid is immiscible with and denser than the organic liquid, titration continuing until the inert liquid is waterfree, (b) running organic liquid continuously into the inert liquid with mixing, (c) simultaneously running Karl-Fischer reagent into the inert liquid so as to keep it just anhydrous and (d) measuring the quantity of Karl-Fischer reagent added and the volume of sample added. The sample organic liquid may be butadiene, isoprene, toluene or hexane. The inert liquid may be ethylene glycol, propane- 1,2-diol, 3-chloropropane- 1,2-diol, 1,3 -butane diol or 1,2,6-hexanetriol. The titration may be carried out in titration vessel 1. Karl-Fischer reagent is added from vessel 11 by motor burette 12. The organic sample liquid is added via magnetic valve 3. The vessel 1 is full to overflowing and, as the reagent and sample are added, liquid overflows into measuring cylinder 8. When the liquid level reaches electrode 9, the concentration of water in the sample is automatically displayed at 17.
