Tools for setting-out work.-A batten-mould or gauge, particularly for use in shipbuilding, comprises five or more flexible battens connected together by hinges which are adjustable along the battens. From the diagram of a part of the ship on the scrieve board, Fig. 1, the true lengths of the edges AB, CD of a plate, and the positions of their points of intersection with the frames 1 - - 5 are obtained by geometric means. One or more diagonal lines HK, PQ, RS on the plate ABDC are also drawn across the frames on the scrieve board, and their true lengths obtained. A number of flexible battens, Fig. 3, one for each frame, plate edge AB and CD, and diagonal are taken, and the lengths of the frames and the points of intersection e<1> - - s<1> therewith of the plate edges and diagonals are marked upon them. The battens are connected together at these points by hinges, so that the surface and outline of the battens assume the correct form of the plate and frames. The hinges, Fig. 5, have flaps in the form of clamps X, Y for connexion to the battens, and the centre of the pivot pin W is in line with one edge of each of the battens of the pair connected thereby. The pin W is preferably detachably held in its socket by a pin Z or a spring engaging a circumferential groove in the pin.
