Abstract

Feeding webs.-A web of paper or fabric is stretched transversely while passing round a roller in a coating or other machine, by means of a pair of thin bands or belts passing round guide-pulleys and round the roller so as to underlap the margins of the web. The tendency of the web to move to the parts of the roller having the greatest diameter effects a lateral stretching of the web. The guide-pulleys may be adjustable in opposite directions to suit webs of different widths, and may also be adjusted simultaneously in either direction to meet variations in the path of the web. Scrapers may be provided to clean the belts and roller. As shown, the web 1 passes round the roller 2 and partly overlaps metal belts 4 passing round the roller 2 and round flanged pulleys 5, which are carried by bearings 6 slidable upon a square shaft 7, which is adjustably mounted on the machine frame by screws 9, 10 to vary the tension of the belts. Arms 11 of the bearings 6 are connected bv a rotatable right and left handed screwed rod 12 for adjustment of the belts towards and away from each other, and the rod 12 is adjustable longitudinally by a screw 13 provided with collars 14, 15 engaging a collar 16 on the rod 12 so as to adjust the belts together to suit the path of the web. Scrapers 18, pivoted to the arms 11 and adjustable by screws 19, are provided for cleaning the belts 4, and a scraper 20 extending the full width of the roller 2 is arranged between the runs of the belts 4 for cleaning the roller.
