RILEY J. BYRON, or MO NT VERNON. INDIANA.
GUIDE-ROLL FOR PAPER-MACHINES,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1920.
Application filed m 21, 1919. Serial No. 312,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, RILEY J. BYRON, a citizen of-theUnited States, residing at Mount Vernon, inthe county of Posey and tary movement, thereby permitting a horizontalswinging movement of the roller sup ported thereby, to guide the web operating over the rollers, to the center of the same, when the web has shifted, laterally of the frame. p
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for automatically adjusting the web to maintain the same in atrue line centrally of the frame, during the operation of the machine.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates aside elevational view of a portion of a paper making machine, having my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan view, and; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the roller pivot. Referring now to the drawing in detail, my invention is shown as applied to a portion of a paper making machine, preferably what is known asthe wet end of the machine, but it is to be understoodthat the adjustable roller may be employed in various places throughout the machine, wherein it is necessary to maintain the web in a direct central line, with the machine.
The reference character 5 designates the ends of the frame, the same having connection with the horizontally extending mem bers 6, which form the supporting beams for the base thereof, the members 7, which extend transversely of the frame are also connected to the horizontally extending members 6, adjacent the ends of said members 7 for supporting the frame rigidly, in connection with the remaining portions of the machine, not shown.
The horizontal members 8'form the upper portion of the frame, and have their ends mounted on the upper edges of the members 5, and as shown the transverse members 9 connect the members 8, for holding the same in spaced relation with each other. Supported on each of the members 8, is an upwardly extending bracket 10, the brackets of the members 8 being arranged opposite each other, and provided with apertures 11 forming bearings for the ends 12 of the stationary rollers 13 and 14:.
These'rollers 13 and 14;, are disposed adjacent the ends of the frame, and accommodate the web 15, used in the manufacture of paper for carrying the wetted paper forward to suitable squeezing rolls, not shown.
Arranged substantially intermediate the length of the frame, is a relatively long bearing supporting member 16, which supports the bearing block 17, which is relatively wide and provided with a central aperture 18 through which extends the sh aft 19 of the bearing 20, one .end of the shaft 19 being threaded as at 21 to receive the nut 22, for
securing the bearing 20 against displacement, but at the same time to permit of a restricted, swinging motion of the roller supported thereby.
The roller, forming the important feature of the invention comprises roller members 23 spaced apart by the bearing 20, the shaft 24'on which the roller members are rigidly mounted, has extended ends 24 which are adapted to engage the plates 25 secured to the upper portion of the bearing blocks 17, the pins 26, which extendnpwardly from the blocks are adapted to cooperate with the extensions 24 of the shaft 24 for restricting the horizontal swinging movement thereof.
As clearly shown by. F ig. 3 of the drawing, the shaft 24:,between the spaced inner ends of the roller members 23, is journaled in. the bearing 20, so that the" roller members may revolve with relation to the member 20.
Disposed between the lower ends of the members 5, are the guide rollers 27, which rollers support the web 15 in its operation.
The operation of my device is as follows. The web 15, which as shown operates in a plane centrally of the machine on frame, and it will be seen that while the web 15 is moving in a direct straight line, the roller members 23 remain stationary with relation operating over the frame, a guide roll in cluding a shaft having a pair of spaced rollers amountedthereon, a pivot pin forming a bearing for the shaft and having connection therewith between adjacent ends of the rollers, means to restrict swinging movement of the rollers, and said shaft: having its, endsextending beyond the ends of the rollers, and means for supporting the ends of the shaft. a a V ln testimony that I'olaim theforegoing as my ow-nyl havehereto affixed my signature in; the presence of two Witnesses.
