Abstract

1397071 Feeding webs MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 13 July 1972 [13 April 1971] 9304/71 Heading B8R A web accumulator, e.g. in web splicing apparatus as described in U.K. Specification 1,199,922, comprises a first carriage C2 movable by drive means relative to a second carriage C1, each carriage having a plurality of rollers 47, 48, 49, 50 and 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 arranged in V formation, to provide a web path around all the rollers, with alternate rollers in the path being rollers of the first carriage and the intervening rollers being rollers of the second carriage. The drive means comprises a motor 62, the drive of which is transmitted through a gear-box 65, hollow shaft 69 and slipping clutch 68 to a chain 59 attached to the carriage C2 which runs on rollers in vertical rails. The torque required to slip the clutch is controlled by the pressure of air supplied to the clutch through the shaft 69, the pressure being adjusted by regulators (83), (88), Fig. 6 (not shown) connected in parallel. In operation, when a splice is desired to be made the pneumatic/electrical circuit of Fig. 6 is manually triggered. Firstly, a web supply reel (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), is pneumatically braked thereby increasing the tension in the web, which is continually fed to a web consuming device. The increased tension in the running web pulls the carriage C2 downwards causing the clutch to slip. At the same time a striker 104 on the carriage C2 actuates an electric switch which starts the motor 62, the latter being ineffective, however, due to the slipping clutch. The striker 104 also actuates a pneumatic valve which initiates the splicing operation. This may be inititated before the reel 2 has been brought to a standstill, web clamps being used to hold the web stationary in the splicing station. After splicing, the reel brakes and web clamps are released, the carriage C2 stops descending, and the clutch stops slipping as the replacement reel (6) accelerates to web feed speed. When clutch slip stops, the motor 62 is effective to raise the carriage C2 and replenish the web in the accumulator. Tension in the running web is controlled by a pneumatically adjustable roller (7).
