Abstract

1396884 Valves BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 12 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 15070/71 Heading F2V Rotary ball valve 10 is opened to supply gas to a burner by spring-returned actuator 34 when solenoid valve 31 pressurizes line 30, the pressure in line 30 also acting via restrictor 33a to close a valve 26 in a duct 15 extending from the ball chamber of valve 10, and via restrictor 32a to advance piston 17 against spring(s) 18, air and gas in cylinder 16 and duct 15 downstream of valve 26 being released by valve 20. In this condition, leakage into duct 15 is sensed by pressure-responsive switch 27. When valve 31 depressurizes line 30 to close valve 10, valve 26 opens and piston 17 returns leftwards to exhaust the ball chamber and duct 15 so that leakage gas is encouraged to flow to duct 15, switch 27 again ultimately responding to a predetermined pressure rise in duct 15 indicative of continuing leakage after piston 17 has fully returned. In a modification, valve 26 is replaced by a 3-way piston valve mechanically linked to the ball valve.
