Abstract
1373459 Gas turbine engine fuel systems WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 11 Dec 1972 [6 Jan 1972] 57004/72 Heading FIG A gas turbine engine comprises a combustion chamber having an atomizing type fuel nozzle to which fuel is supplied and atomized by means of pressurized air. A valve is provided for controlling admission of atomizing air, also a controller for controlling the valve and having means for opening the valve in response to an operating condition indicative of the need for atomizing air by the fuel nozzle, and a timing device adapted to be . actuated by the valve opening means and to close the valve after a predetermined time. The engine shown comprises an atomizing fuel nozzle 13 to which high-pressure air is supplied. The valve 15 is controlled by a diaphragm unit 23 to which control fluid is supplied through line 17, regulating valve 19 and solenoid-controlled valve 21. The valve 21 is controlled by a controller 22 which incorporates a timer device and which first acts to open the valve 21 and thus the valve 15 when a certain engine parameter is sensed indicative of the need for atomizing air to be supplied to the fuel nozzle, and then after a predetermined time, acting to close the valve 21 which in turn causes closure of the valve 15. The compressor pressure is sensed by a device 25 which passes a signal to the controller 22, the controller then causing the solenoid valve 21 to open so that control fluid passes to the diaphragm 23 to open the valve 15 so that atomizing air may flow to the fuel nozzle 13.
